In the past few years, artificial intelligence (AI) has become deeply woven into the fabric of social media. From recommendation algorithms and content moderation to AI “companions” and chatbots, its role is both pervasive and growing. While AI offers great promise, there are serious pitfalls—especially when human psychology is involved.

Some AI tools are tuned to detect signs of depression, anxiety or self-harm from users’ posts—by analyzing linguistic cues, activity patterns. Creativity & Accessibility
AI tools, like image-generators, video, filters etc., empower creators, small businesses, and users who are not design pros. It allows faster content creation, language translation, accessibility tools (captions, alt text), helping more people to participate. -
Rare But Significant Benefits
While not always in the headlines, AI has helped with social inclusion (e.g. helping users with autism spectrum disorder practice social conversations in lower-stress environments), or giving people in remote regions access to supportive communities or resources. These are less visible, but meaningful. There are multiple recent cases where AI companions / chatbots allegedly contributed to teen suicides, self-harm, or encouraging dangerous behavior.
